Biological EVOLUTION SERIES #114

BY Christyn OVERSTAKE

ARTIST STATEMENT: Creating a sculpture made with musical notes has been on our list of possible sculptures for a couple of years. Music is relatable to everyone. In music, a medley is a piece composed from parts of existing pieces, usually three. They are common and popular music. Research proves that music can change the mood of a person immediately. Music helps to heal, encourage, uplift, create joy, and it is relaxing. We wanted to create an interactive sculpture that people of all ages could touch, admire, connect with, and most importantly, create music of their own. We love creating sculptures that bring joy, playfulness, peacefulness, and fun to the Owner. Our design of the notes being cut from the bell tower, then seamlessly floating into the air as they leave the tower gives the illusion that music has been played.

DINOSAUR RIDING A UNIcycle

BY DOUG COX

ARTIST STATEMENT: I have always thought dinosaurs were cool and interesting. A small plastic dinosaur was my model for this sculpture. The posture of the dinosaur evokes energy and movement which helps to animate the sculpture and make it feel alive despite it’s inanimate materials. I like how this sculpture plays with ideas of time, technology and nature.

CLATHRUS

BY NICK Willett

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Clathrus comes from the more organic side of my creative spectrum and include metals I have collected from the streams, valleys, sinkholes, and forests of the Ozarks. These materials were once unwelcome invaders of our natural spaces. With them, I create representations of the flora and fauna that inhabit this sacred and beautiful land. This particular piece is a representation of Clathrus ruber (or cage mushroom), a fungus that grows into a hexagonal cage like structure with bold coloring and intricate texture.

The overall form of my sculpture is 8 feet tall and 5 feet at its widest point. The structure is made primarily out of old pipe and is texture welded using a technique I have developed over the years.

Clathrus is the first large piece in this series. I have created several small floral and plantlike pieces leading up to this opportunity. Clathrus brings an element of the natural Ozarks to the center city scape.

STEEL PAPER

BY Alex Cogbill and Paul SIEbenthall
ARTIST STATEMENT: “Voice of the Garden” and “Flying Jewel” are two murals that showcase two important workers of The Natural State; a bee and a hummingbird. With the magnitude of attractions to see in Arkansas, it can be easy to forget the smallest among us who make this region so beautiful. The bee is perched upon the Arkansas state flower, an apple blossom, pollinating the surrounding flowers ensuring their growth for the season. The Hummingbird is one of the most unique birds Arkansas is able to accommodate. The subject chosen for this mural is seen hovering and gathering nectar from a honeysuckle. They, too, are pollinators, ensuring a diverse ecosystem for other animals to live on, though they themselves like to be left alone. However, when a group of hummingbirds are together it is called a “charm”. Their speed and agility are unlike other birds, flying backward and upside down making them a spectacle in any garden they inhabit.
